Ratel Alcan is considered a mutant only because he has nine pupils - more than five. Who knows why that's considered bad; it's just the way the caste system works. Poor Ratel was chucked out on the streets once his pupil amount came in - well, it's more likely that he just ran away; he still has his antennae intact. Who knows when he got the can tied to his tail, but it was probably the fault of some mischievous young glowans who just wanted to tease him. Problem is he can't get it off, and it's actually slowly killing the end of his tail as he grows and the wire gets tighter.
Ratel likes his can, in a bit of a weird way. He doesn't appreciate that his tail is dead, but he likes to use the can to hide things. Ratel's actually a pickpocket - and his target is usually keys. Keys to apartments, homes, restaurants, stores, anything he can get his hands on. Of course he hides all of these in his can. He quietly returns the keys - or just tosses them away - after he's had the chance to track down the owners and raid some food from their pantries, or steal some valuables that he can barter off.
Yes, i said he sneaks into people's houses. He doesn't tell anyone that he can muffle his can - it's easy, all he has to do is shove a rag in it and carry it instead of letting it hang.

Ratel's a bit famous through the city he lives in. Nobody really likes him, but they at least pity him a little. He's known as "Rattlecan" around town, as nobody knows his real name. Ironically this is 9 letters; just like the middle name he would have had but never received due to being a mutant.
The small band of mutants in the city avoid him, instead of including in their little group. His can is a liability, rattling everywhere he goes - they don't know he can muffle it. Why would they want him to be with them when they have to steal for a living?

And he never stops rattling. Ratel is a sleepwalker. Even in his sleep he wanders around the city, mumbling to himself about who knows what. He's become so used to the rattling can it doesn't wake him up - that or he's just a really deep sleeper. It's a classic dare among younger glowans to sneak things into Ratel's can while he's asleep.

Ratel might be a bit psychotic by the way. He's very, very protective of his can and usually won't let anyone touch it. He talks to himself sometimes (does he think there's someone there or is he just lonely?), and obviously continues this habit in his sleep.
I've been wondering if Ratel dreams about a different life. Like, himself, leading a completely different life. I've considered it. He might have an imaginary purple/blue friend. Maybe. We shall see.
